Tobago PLN Project 2020

The project involves installing three interventions in ONE

  1. PLCs for collaboration
  2. Action research for learning and innovation
  3. A Coaching Model

So what is the idea?

The idea is to encourage Tobago schools to implement  Networked learning communities (NLCs) including Professional Learning Communities (PLCs).

The PLCs will engage in action research and do so through a culture of coaching as a form or professional learning.

Beyond PLCs

We are also promoting interorganizational collaboration in the form of school networks or clusters as well as networks of teachers within schools. We aim for two follow ups and monitoring.

What are PLNs?

Networks are ‘groups or systems of interconnected people and organizations (including schools) whose aims and purposes include the improvement of learning and aspects of well-being known to affect learning

PLNs are more than PLCs. PLCS are school based. Networks extends the idea to individuals at different levels and institutions. Schools can be networked in clusters and so can administrators. You are now in a principal PLN.

Read on Principal Networks

The School of Education at the University of the West Indies have steadfastly promoted the PLC concept for schools. However, as a system reform, we promote PLNs, understanding the broader significance of networking and the value of interschool collaboration.

Please read Networks for learning and development across school education

Also what the research says about professional learning networks and communities

What are PLCS?

A group of people sharing and critically interrogating their practice in an ongoing, reflective, collaborative, inclusive, learning-oriented, growth-promoting way.

What are the charateristics of PLCs?

1)Shared mission, vision, values, goals
2)Collaborative teams focused on learning
3)Collective inquiry (Action Research)
4)Action orientation and experimentation
5)Commitment to Continuous improvement
6)Results orientation
What are the four questions that guide practice?
»What do we expect students to learn?
•Clear standards and goals
»How will we know when they have learnt it?
•Common formative assessments
•National Learning Assessments
•Data informed instruction
»How do we respond when they don’t know it?
•Evidence-based interventions
»How will we respond when they already know it?
•Enrichment Activities
