Non Traditional Approaches to Helping Boys at Risk
Male Awarenes Now Project (MAN)
The Male Awareness Now (MAN) Project is a gendered initiative targeting 128 at risk/ marginalized males from inner-city communities between the ages of 10-18. The program has provided an avenue for boys to engage in interactive social skills sessions. Capacity building through parenting trainings was provided to beneficiaries and/ or members of their families. Cultural expression classes, gender awareness through school engagement and activities were hosted. Career development and guidance were also provided through development sessions and specialized site visits.
The Innovation Gender issues were introduced to schools through fun and structured gender themed activities. Program was shaped by the needs identified directly by the beneficiaries. Participants were encouraged to be central in highlighting gender issues affecting them and their peers. The collaborative involvement of the family, public, private and civil society partners facilitated dialogue, opportunities for participants to sensitize/highlight their issues, and provided resources and materials.
